Among the unaffiliated, Lister stands out as a Beagle who is a tracker first and a friend always. Most evenings Lister translates glassbird songs by guessing wildly and confidently until the lanterns are out and the soup stalls close. There is a corner of the leaning tree where Lister is unofficially assumed to be in charge of nothing in particular. Lister believes ordinary days are where big mysteries hide, usually under a bowl or behind a door nobody checked.
